Dublin 1902

Liz Queen of Clean

You may not have read that Malones Cleaning has been an established business in Dublin since 1902, you can read more about our own history here.

We thought we'd take a trip into the past and see what else was happening in Dublin and Ireland that year.

W.B. Yeats and Lady Gregory wrote the one act play Cathleen Ní Houlihan which was performed for the first time. Ireland was depicted as a woman encouraging her sons to fight for her. It was a  part of the Irish struggle for Independence.

Our most famous literary son James Joyce finished his degree in UCD and was let loose into the wide world, two years before he met Nora Barnacale who eventually inspired him to write Ulysses.

In that same year two English film makers Mitchell & Kenyon travelled to Ireland and made a series of shorts.

Watch their short piece filmed at UCC Sports Day.

The Irish were making their mark in London where the Gaelic League were keeping traditions alive by organising dances to promoted Irish culture at the Athenaeum Hall, Tottenham Court Rd.

There was a cold snap that year judging from this photo of College Green in Dublin.

Apart from a win over Wales in football (3-0) in Cardiff our other football results were not so impressive.

Linfield won the Irish League and the Irish Cup

Thanks for reading. If you have any facts about 1902 please  let us know!

Untidy Teenagers

Liz Queen of Clean

Messy Teenager

Messy Teenager

Following on from our blog yesterday we are tackling the teenager who will not address their bedroom issues which can amount to an assault on many of your senses as well as your emotions.

The last thing a teenager wants to do is clean up their room. Their worlds are occupied with shopping, football, roaming around in packs, facebooking and tweeting their friends, listening to music, playing games and watching television.

Here are a few tips we have gathered to help the frustrated parent along the path.

  •  Remember they are not being untidy to annoy you as your most immediate living space is a reflection of their mind and a teenage mind has so much to deal with and is in a constant state of flux.

  • Sometimes leaving it to the individual will work as eventually they will get sick of living in squalor and make an attempt to tidy up themselves.

  • Do not have huge arguments over their bedroom, keep the big arguments for the really important issues in life.

  • But do insist that they retrieve any kitchen items that have made their way into the room and any half eaten food, maybe a talk on hygiene if that situation gets out of hand.

  • If they want clean clothes to impress their friends then get them to pick up their own laundry items (let them choose a funky clothes basket if that helps).

  • Use a little psychology perhaps telling them that as they are usually such a tidy person it is hard for you to understand why their room is so messy.

I hope this has been some help to you and if you have any ideas of your own, please let us know!!

Messy Children or Chasing Your Tail.

Liz Queen of Clean

Messy Child

Messy Child

You feel that familiar tug from somewhere around your shoes and look down to see your adorable child hiding behind a mask of dripping chocolate/food/parts of the garden and before you know it whatever is sticking to it has trailed its way from the garden through the kitchen and halfway up your jeans.

Fast forward a few years and somewhere between school and college your teenagers room is a sea of clothes, textbooks, broken parts of toys-that-should-have-been-put-away-a -long-time-ago, old broken CD covers, games covers, nail glue and somewhere in there is the laptop they have asked you to find.

Either scenario is one of frustration and exhaustion for any parent.

There are a few ways to deal with both cases but today we shall look at the younger members of the species!

Here are a few solutions to try.

  • Where the hygiene of your child seems to becoming critical a firm and serious chat about what happens to people who stay dirty or even a trip to the library to find a cautionary tale.

  • Where their rooms are concerned make sure that they have enough storage space to actually put everything away.

  • As opposed to taking something away if they do not do it, give then something if they do do it so at least there is a positive angle when they consider tidying up.

  • For the younger ones make a competition out of cleaning up their room. If there are siblings involved first past the post gets a prize (but have something for the loser as a consolation prize as a total loss in the game may halt any further room cleaning!)

  • Designate sometime between dinner, relaxation (TV?) and bed as a slot for cleaning up, the more routine you make this the easier it will become.

  • You may encourage your child to donate old toys to a charity (you don't have to go completely Joan Crawford with this one of course.)

We would love to hear about ways you have tackled this yourself!

Our next blog shall tackle the older species of Untidy Teenager.

FROM TOXIC TO NATURAL CLEANING

Liz Queen of Clean

1_48ab3aa019a66-35-1.jpg

Natural cleaning products offer environmentally sound, alternatives to the toxic and potentially lethal household cleaning products used in many homes today. Use of these natural options is especially critical as most traditional cleaning products eventually contact the air, water, and/or soil, where they can cause significant and irreparable harm to animals, plants, drinking water, and food supplies.

These cleaning products contain dangerous ingredients, including neurotoxins, carcinogens, allergens, central nervous system depressants, heavy metals, and other agents that cause or contribute to cancer, respiratory problems, reproductive abnormalities, allergic reactions, and behavioral problems, among other health issues. Ingredients from household cleaning products make their way into the environment through various routes: they are flushed down toilets, poured down sinks, sprayed into the air, thrown into the trash, and dumped onto the ground. In fact, many hazardous cleaning products are landfilled or incinerated, upon which they release their toxins into the environment and contribute to depletion of the ozone layer, pollute groundwater, contaminate the soil, and harm plant and animal life. For example:

  • Phosphates, found in dishwasher and laundry detergents, cause algae bloom, which kills fish and aquatic plants, and produces chemicals that are toxic to animals and people who drink the water.
  • Trisodium nitrilotriacetate is a possible carcinogen in laundry detergents. It can disrupt the elimination of metals in wastewater treatment facilities.
  • Chlorine bleach (sodium hypochlorite), available alone and in detergents and other products, is toxic to fish and can bind with organic compounds in water to form organochlorines, which break down slowly in the environment and accumulate in the fatty tissues of wildlife. Chlorine is especially toxic to organisms that live in water and soil.
  • Napthas and mineral spirits, found in furniture polishes, are neurotoxins and considered hazardous waste. Mineral spirits break down very slowly and contaminate air and water.
  • Formaldehyde, an ingredient in furniture polish and various cleaning products, is a potential human carcinogen and a known cancer-causing agent in animals.
  • Phthalates, found in furniture polish, disrupt hormone function and can cause genetic defects in both animals and humans.
  • Ether-type solvents, methylene chloride, butyl cellosive, and petroleum distillates, found in oven cleaners are hazardous waste and can contaminate the air, water, and soil.
  • Sulphuric acid and sodium hydroxide, in drain cleaners, can change the pH of water and cause fish kills.

NEXT TIME YOU ARE SHOPPING FOR CLEANING PRODUCTS THINK NATURAL YOU WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO THE ENVIRONMENT.

Wooden Floor Cleaning and Maintenance Tips

Liz Queen of Clean

You have a right to be proud of that new hardwood floor.  The elegance and warmth that of hardwood floors to can transform your rooms in character and personality.   That hardwood floor brings up the value of your home as it enhances the quality of life for your family as it makes your home more inviting and more impressive to guests whenever you entertain.

The two elements that will naturally gravitate to your floor are moisture and dust and dirt. Yet these are the two elements that you should be most on guard against to keep your floor in mint condition for many years. Water is the natural enemy of a hardwood floor because standing water can warp the wood which can ruin the flooring entirely. Even small amounts of dust or dirt that stay on the floor can become trapped on feet and scratch the beautiful finish of the wood. It is not being obsessive to have your family and guests leave their shoes in the entry hall to reduce the potential for dirt getting on your hardwood floors. You should plan to routinely dust and sweep the floor so that you are catching any additional dirt that may have settled on the floor naturally. A weekly vacuuming of the floor combined with regular care of the wood with a swifter mop is a nice routine because you are getting the dirt up without using any moisture.

New Series: Famous Malones throughout history. Part 1 - Dublin's Finest Molly Malone

Liz Queen of Clean

Molly Malone, Dublin's most famous fishmonger, is a chaste maiden to some and "the tart with the cart" to othersEveryone agrees that Molly Malone is one of the more famous people in the history of Dublin. Whether she’s a person who ever really existed is another question.

She’s certainly one of the strangest icons ever commemorated officially by a city government. The statue of her on lower Grafton Street, erected in 1987, depicts a woman in a 17th century dress that shows so much cleavage Madonna might be unwilling to wear it. The old song about her, “Cockles and Mussels,” is a sort of unofficial anthem of Dublin, sung regularly by fans at soccer and hurling matches. How this young woman who allegedly sold fish by day, sold her body by night and died young of an undefined fever is a long and twisted tale indeed.

Quick the Queen is coming, best remember... "tips on cleaning the house for royalty!

Liz Queen of Clean

PA-10664678-390x285.jpg

I remember when I was an annoying child and my mum used to ask me to clean my room, I reply "Why? Whose coming, the Queen!".  Never did I think a truer word would be spoken and while she won't be popping in for tea, its good to know if I did get the heads up that she'd be appearing I'd know just what to do inside 15 minutes!

What it is: A 15 Minute Cleanup is the quickest step-by-step guide to cleaning a room in 15 minutes or less. While the room may not pass the white glove test, it will be more than presentable to guests, royalty or otherwise!

What it Isn’t: A 15 Minute Cleanup is not the only cleaning regimen you’ll need to keep your home in tip top shape. It’s not the general intense cleaning we all love to do, (!), but a brief pickup of a room.

Why A 15 Minute Cleanup Works: A 15 Minute Cleanup works because it recognizes that there are three types of items we need to clean up in a room. Everything falls into one of three categories...

  • Trash
  • Things that don't belong in the room.
  • Things that belong in the room, in a different place.

Having only a few categories to sort items into makes a pickup run more smoothly. The 15 Minute Cleanups also work because they are designed to maintain a room. Having a 15 Minute Cleaning session in a room several times a week will keep your home looking great between more intense cleanings.

More Intense Cleanups:

If you need a little more intense cleanup, you can try the following. These cleanups will take you between 1-2 hours per room depending on how much cleaning they’ve had lately. When you make your cleaning schedule, you can use the 15 Minute Cleanups and the Intense Cleanups together to create a perfectly clean home.

You can do it in 15 min!! GO!!!

What Supplies You Need:

  • Vacuum Cleaner Dusting Attachment (for high ceilings, walls, corners)
  • Dusting Spray and/or
  • Furniture Polish- Malones Wax can be used for wood around the house.
  • Microfiber cloths (for general and intricate dusting)
  • A dust rag, basket, bag, or box to put non-living room items.

15 Minute Living Area Cleanup

This cleanup can work for formal and informal living areas and sitting areas. It also works for the other rooms where entertaining is done. The idea with this cleanup is to get the room ready for guests, or events without spending a lot of time on the details. Hoover, dust and dump the junk.

  • Put all items that do not belong in the living room in a container.
  • Tackle the couch.
  • Dust down the coffee table and arrange its contents properly.
  • Put all items that do not belong in the living room in a container.
  • Dust down the coffee table and arrange its contents properly.
  • Neatly arrange the magazines and books.
  • Vacuum or sweep up the floor.
  • Put away your dust rag and vacuum or broom.

15 Minute Kitchen Cleanup

The kitchen cleanup aims to remove trash, dirty dishes, and unwanted items from a kitchen, making it ready to be used, or in good shape for guests to be around. While you won’t scrub out the refrigerator, or clean under the sink in this cleanup (save that for the spring clean), do remove any rubbish and dishes, making your kitchen clean and clutter free.

Grab all of your needed supplies together (listed above.)

  • Basic Cleaning Supply listed above
  • Best All-Purpose Cleaners– Malones Anti Bacterial may be useful for around the kitchen
  • Best Housekeeping Gloves

Run a sink of hot, soapy water.

If you have a double sink with a garbage disposal on one side, make sure to use the disposal-free side. Keeping the disposal side free will allow you to scrape leftovers down the drain quickly while you work.

Scrape off all the dishes into the trash or garbage disposal.

If step 2 has blocked your disposal, scrape the dishes off onto a dirty plate. Try to choose the dishes that are going to give you or your dishwasher the most trouble to get clean. Put the heavily soiled dishes on the bottom. Large dishes like pans and bowls can be filled with hot soapy water and set on the counter to soak.

  • While the dishes are soaking, go through the kitchen clearing out trash from your floor, countertops, cupboards, etc.
  • Move on to gathering all the items that do not belong in the kitchen. Put all these items into a basket (see supplies).
  • Put away all of the items that belong in the kitchen but are not in their proper places.
  • Load the dishwasher or wash by hand.
  • Wash down your countertops, appliances, and sink.
  • Sweep and mop, or vacuum.
  • Take out the trash.

15 Minute Bathroom Cleanup

The bathroom cleanup helps you quickly organise and wipe down bathroom surfaces. Give the loo a good scrub - this should really be done every day or two days minimum anyway. This cleanup will work to maintain your weekly bathroom scrub down, or get a bathroom ready in a hurry when unexpected guests show up.

  • Grab your supplies
  • Grab all dirty clothing and put it in a hamper.
  • Grab all trash and put in the trash can.
  • Take a disinfectant wipe and wipe down the sink and tub.
  • Using a toilet brush and toilet cleaner, briefly scrub out the inside of the toilet.
  • Using a disinfectant wipe, wipe down the outside of the toilet.
  • Using glass cleaner or vinegar, wipe down the mirror.
  • Pickup all the items belonging in another room.
  • Return items that belong in the bathroom to their proper places.
  • Sweep or mop.

15 Minute Kid’s Room Cleanup

This kid’s room cleanup is great for parents at a loss for where to begin when faced with a disaster area child’s room. It’s also perfect for older readers who can actually follow the list themselves to get their rooms clean.

  • Grab your supplies.
  • Grab all dirty clothing and put it in a hamper.
  • Grab all trash and put it in the trash can.
  • Make the bed.
  • Grab all the clean clothes and refold or rehang.
  • Pickup all the toys from the floor, bed, desk, etc.
  • Pickup all the items that don't belong in the room and place them in a basket, box, or bag.
  • Sweep and mop, or vacuum.

15 Minute Bedroom Cleanup

Like many people, I usually leave cleaning my own bedroom for last. After a busy day or week, a bedroom can be in terrible shape. This cleanup will help maintain a bedroom or give it a quick pickup just in time for a restful night.

  • Grab your supplies.
  • Grab all dirty clothing and put it in a hamper.
  • Grab all clean clothes and refold or re-hang.
  • Grab all trash and put in the trashcan.
  • Make the bed.
  • Pickup all the misplaced items on the floor, bed, desk, etc.
  • Straighten surfaces.
  • Sweep and mop or vacuum.
  • Put away your supplies

That's it. You're done. Does it look like a place you'd actually like to live in?

You would be forgiven for thinking it was February.  There's that winter chill to the air.

At home we had a fire lit, the heating switched back on and an extra layer on the bed last night!

Determined not to feel bad about it I found this clip - the weather lady's laugh is utterly infectious.  Cheered me up no end, hope it does the same for you!

Dust-Proof Your Home

Liz Queen of Clean

imagesCAUWBF65.jpg

Any household cleaning tips would be remiss to not cover how to clear the dust in your home. Here's how to start cleaning dust from your home and where to look for it.1. Dust Mites

Toss throw pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, and curtains in the dryer on the "air fluff" cycle for 15 minutes to banish dust. (To kill dust mites, wash and dry with heat — water at least 130 degrees; the "high" setting on most dryers.)

2. Dusting Tips

  • Don’t use feather duster only spreads dust around.
  • A clean paintbrush whisks dust from pleated lampshades, wood chairs, railings, and picture frames
  • A blow-dryer on "cool" cleans books, knickknacks, and plants (real or not)
  • Rubber gloves, dampened, sweep up pet hair from upholstery
  • A clean white sock wipes closed mini blinds
  • A slightly moist cloth attracts and traps dust; a dry one pushes it around. Plus, since dust particles are abrasive, dry rubbing can scratch furniture over time. A little water works fine, even on wood. The exception: Moisture and electronics don't mix (see chart below).
  • Apply a small amount of polishing product to the cloth, then tackle the furniture. Spritz directly on surfaces, and you're likely to use too much, requiring extra buffing with a clean cloth (and buying polish more often). Fail to remove it all, and the smeary residue attracts more dust.
  • Dust obeys gravity, so start by wiping the highest surfaces; let the dust settle, then work your way down.

Last, don't forget your upholstery — it's a major breeding ground for dust mites. How to deal: Use your vacuum's fabric attachment on all sides of the cushions as well as on the platform underneath. Sixty percent of household dust comes from outside — most significantly, from shoes. So have folks leave their footwear in the foyer or mudroom upon entering.

These are just a few household cleaning tips to capture and clear dust in your home. Do a scan with your eyes top to bottom and side to side and you'll find the other dusting hot spots.

A short guide to a safer, cleaner home

How safe are the cleaning products you use in your home?

We use cleaning products everywhere in our home and offices. Washing and cleaning our dishes, countertops, furniture, clothes, floors, windows, and now even spraying that “clean air smell” through the air. Makes you wonder what ever happened to opening a window!

In our war on dirt and germs we may often actually be making things worse. We are simply unaware of the significant health damage it could be causing our family and even to our pets!  Many cleaning products in fact are very harmful to the health of people, animals and the environment. Most of these products are made up of petrochemical components and have many disadvantages.

Here are some environmentally friendly cleaning tips for making your household a little greener.

  • Toxic Chemical Cleaning Products

First things first: get rid of all those chemical-heavy cleaning products lurking under your kitchen sink. How many of those bottles read “Danger” or “Caution” complete with a frightening warning? Throw them out!

  • Avoid poor indoor air quality

We hear the air inside a home or office can be more toxic than the air outside! This is because of the presence of toxic materials and substances. .Keeping windows open as often as possible allows fresh air in and keep toxins flowing out. This is especially important when cleaning your home.

  • Minimise your use of  detergents and cleaning products
  • If this isn’t too gratuitous we would advice everyone to use environmentally-friendly cleaning products

Here is a list of top plants for removing toxins from the air in your home
